Cismaru 2021: COVID-19 and antimalarials. Have we been doing it wrong all along?

The authors recommend that instead of using Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) together with the macrolide antibiotic Azithromycin, doctors should first use HCQ and follow this with the addition of Azithromycin.

The picture at right describes the action of both medications, also noting that HCQ is  a metal ionophore, getting zinc across the membrane of the double membrane vesicles that are shielded from the usual immune responses, and inhibiting viral replication.
